The Influence of Mass Media

The evolution of the mass media
has an enormous influence in forming people’s mind. I believe to some extent, that the development of mass media has
converted the society’s thought in many sectors.
First of all, Mass media is the
greatest resource of knowledge for its users. For example, according to recent survey, 80% of college students
use mass media such as newspaper and internet as their reference when they are
looking for supporting data.
Furthermore, Mass media has the ability
to change people’s paradigm. To illustrate
this point, we can make a comparison between urban and remote area’s
residences when facing presidential election. In urban area, where the
information about all candidates are easy to find at mass media, urban people
can make an analysis over candidate’s programs and at the end they are able to
choose the best one. However, because of the limitation of access of
information, people in the remote area will make their political decision based
on like or dislike factor to the candidate and the party.
Yet, since mass media can be easily
accessed by children, mass media has a potential to influence children’s
behavior in negative way. Many television programs show violence that can be
worst figure to kids. Children may duplicate the action of their idol, even
though that is crime.
Also, People tend to be more
consumptive due to mass media’s advertising programs. To illustrate this point, people can be provoked by commercial
activities to buy many things such as fashion, gadget, and food, although sometime
that’s not necessary to buy.
In conclusion, it is clear that the
mass media has substantial effect to people’s opinion. The users of mass media
should aware and careful in absorb the information so that they can use the
knowledge wisely.
