Education To Prevent Sexual Abuse Against Women With Disabilities

for Women defines
sexual abuse to women as a violence against women in any act based on
gender-based discrimination that result or may result in misery of suffering to
women physically, sexually, or psychologically, including threat of such acts,
coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in
private life.
Women with disabilities are more
likely to suffer violence as well as sexual abuse than women without
disabilities. Not only adult women, but also children could be victims of
sexual harassment. Many irresponsible people used both the chance and the
weaknesses of disabled people to do crimes. In many cases, they are often
abused by someone they know such as family member, teacher, or neighbor. For
example, there is a case that a woman with
mental retardation was raped by her
neighbor. Another case is reported that a cruel
stepfather had raped her disable daughter when his wife was not at home.
One of the anticipations to
prevent and protect disabled women from any violence is education. Education including
sexual education should be given to disabled
women. Many of them do not have good
knowledge about sexuality. Education is very important for them. Yet, their
access to education is usually prohibited or restricted. Some people still have
traditional view that their daughters with disabilities may not receive a
normal education. Many parents feel ashamed
to their daughters with special needs then they ignore to give their children a
normal education. When parents have no attention
to their children, the encouragement to obtain good education is non-exist.
The
family should be conscious of the necessary of both formal and informal
education for their family member with disabilities. Disabled women should be taught about sexual education, social life,
science, as well as religion. They need to have
knowledge to survive and become independent in their life, so they can prevent themselves from any sexual abuses
and also violence.
